The Courses
Three courses,
each with its own purpose.
From a first reading of a household balance sheet to a continuing tutored arrangement โ here is what we offer, in full detail.
โ Return to HomeOur Methodology
How each course is taught.
All three courses share a single method: the student reads a primary document, writes a response to it, and receives written commentary from a tutor. The session that follows begins from what the students have written, not from a prepared lecture.
This approach slows the course down in a useful way. Students do not move on from a document until they can write about it with some confidence. The pace of each cohort is therefore set by the group, not by a fixed curriculum calendar.
The courses differ in subject, duration, and the kind of document at the centre. Reading the Statement is an introductory course. Investment Vehicles in Malaysia builds on that foundation. The Tutored Reading Term is a continuing arrangement for students who have already completed at least one introductory course.
The method โ reading, writing, commentary โ is the same in all three courses. The documents change. The student's depth of engagement with the material is expected to increase as they progress.
Evening sessions are typically held twice a week. Reading and written exercises are completed between sessions. Tutor commentary is returned before the following session.
No prior financial knowledge is assumed for the two introductory courses. Students arrive as careful general readers, and that is sufficient.
Reading the Statement
A five-week course in the patient reading of a personal financial statement โ the household balance sheet, the household income statement, and the small set of useful ratios that follow from them. The course is taught in small evening cohorts and includes weekly readings, written exercises, and the construction of the student's own household statements as a working project. Prior knowledge is not assumed.
What the course covers
- Structure of the household balance sheet: assets, liabilities, net position
- The household income statement: inflows, outflows, and the difference between them
- Useful household ratios: liquidity, savings rate, debt-to-asset
- Construction of the student's own household statements as a course project
Session structure
Pre-session reading assigned; student writes a brief response
Evening session opens from student responses; tutor guides close reading
Written exercise submitted after session; tutor commentary returned
Student continues building their personal financial statement project
Investment Vehicles in Malaysia
An eight-week course covering the structure of investment vehicles available to retail investors in Malaysia โ unit trusts, ETFs, the public mutual sector, EPF voluntary contributions, and Private Retirement Schemes. The course attends to fees, structure, and the rights of unit holders, with patient reading of public disclosure documents. The course is taught in small cohorts.
What the course covers
- Structure of SC-regulated unit trusts: fund categories, trustee role, management fees
- Exchange-traded funds available to Malaysian retail investors
- EPF voluntary contributions: mechanics, contribution limits, withdrawal rules
- Private Retirement Schemes: structure, eligible funds, tax relief
- Reading fund prospectuses and disclosure documents
Session structure
Assigned public disclosure document read before session
Session begins from student written responses; tutor leads close reading of document sections
Fee comparison exercise: students compare two published fund fact sheets
Written response submitted; individual tutor commentary returned before next session
Tutored Reading Term
A continuing twelve-week tutored arrangement for students who have completed an introductory course and would value the steady company of an experienced reader as they continue. The tutor meets the student fortnightly, suggests readings, and offers written commentary on the student's own work. The term may be renewed by mutual agreement.
What the arrangement covers
- Six fortnightly meetings over twelve weeks, held at the Plaza Damansara office
- Reading list curated by the tutor to the student's specific interests and goals
- Written commentary from the tutor on each piece of submitted work
- Progress review at the end of the term; option to renew
The Tutored Reading Term is available only to students who have completed at least one of the introductory courses at Lannatim. Please enquire if you have completed equivalent study elsewhere.
